As a young man, Northup helped his father with farming chores and worked as a raftsman on the waterways of upstate New York. In 1828, Solomon Northup married Anne Hampton with whom he had three children, Margaret, Alonzo, and Elizabeth. They lived in Fort Edward and Kingsbury in Washington County, New York. The family owed a farm in Hebron and did menial jobs to support themselves.
